Geriatric GI

Geriatric GI care addresses age-specific presentations and risks with the rising elderly population. The session covers chronic constipation in older adults (polyethylene glycol, prucalopride, linaclotide, lubiprostone), polypharmacy and GI effects (NSAIDs, anticholinergics, opioids), anticoagulation and GI bleeding management including DOAC reversal, frailty assessment for endoscopy and surgical procedures, end-of-life GI care, and sarcopenia in chronic GI disease. Discussion addresses the modified Glasgow Coma Scale for elderly GI bleed risk, dementia and GI symptoms, the role of comprehensive geriatric assessment in GI clinics, post-endoscopy delirium prevention, and ethics around aggressive intervention in advanced GI disease.
