Diverticular Disease
Diverticular disease management has evolved beyond antibiotics-for-all with growing evidence-based pathways. The session covers acute uncomplicated diverticulitis (antibiotic-free management for low-risk patients, the DIABOLO and AVOD trials), complicated diverticulitis interventions (percutaneous drainage, surgery), elective surgery indications including recurrent attacks and Hinchey grading, fibre and lifestyle prevention, segmental colitis associated with diverticulosis (SCAD), and outpatient management protocols. Discussion addresses the role of NSAIDs and steroids in recurrence, smouldering diverticulitis, robotic vs laparoscopic sigmoidectomy, the comparison of damage-control vs primary anastomosis in emergency surgery, and emerging diverticulosis epidemiology in younger populations.
